Challenged to keep music alive through 28 hour non stop improvisation concert

Live from Aarhus Denmark, 10 artists are improvising onstage for 28 hours non stop, attempting to endure it to the last minute while keeping music alive. They are as different at species in an ecosystem, building on traditions ranging from jazz to classic, rock, avantgarde, roots, folk, electronica and more. To make it to the end, they will be in the constant proces of listening, making space and taking space to shape music. They don't know if they will accomplish, or if the instincts take over to a degree that makes that prevents them from collaborating. But they share the same will. They play until Sunday at 10 pm CET /September 10th 2023

Breaking the Surface

About the audiovisual installation by Between Music. With Laila Skovmand, artistic director Between Music https://ift.tt/7ve4Aiq Breaking the Surface consists of seven art installations. The work deals with the theme of cycle, and is inspired by the old alchemists' thoughts on coherence / systems / cycles. Each installation consists of a film and an accompanying composition. All the films are made under water. The films produce a universe that is fabulously surreal, populated with people and objects from the "over-water". Something both seamlessly impossible and painfully picturesque, inspired by the Renaissance painters Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel. Hair, clothes, underwater plants, a large dead fish and eggs thrown into the stream of water in line with the movements of the water. The colors are both deep, heavy as in Renaissance paintings and fresh, characterized by the element, the water of the lake. The music in the installations will be electronic compositions, based on unique samples from the underwater instruments Between Music has developed. The music will move between the minimalistic, where the essence of the individual underwater sounds is at the center - to more complex electronic numbers based on the AquaSonic music, but the common denominator is tactile and vibrating. We will use the underwater reverb from the project "Sound's hidden journey under Nordic waters" to create a deeper layer to the music.

Crowdfunding campaign Between Music

Support Between Music to get back on track again after bankruptcy! www.betweenmusic.dk The spectacular Danish underwater band, Between Music, has hit hard times, since one of their water tanks broke after a concert and caused damages for some €650.000 (710.000 US$). Between Music and the venue were both insured, but the insurance companies refused to cover the damage so Between Music had to declare bankruptcy and lost all its unique instruments and equipment. However, musicians Laila Skovmand and Robert Karlsson have now fueled new optimism to recover the band and its world-renowned underwater concert ‘AquaSonic’. Between Music has toured the world with their underwater concert AquaSonic since 2016. From Australia to northern Norway and from Hong Kong to Siberia, five musicians have sung and played on their custom-built instruments immersed in five large aquariums. The unique underwater concert has taken over ten years to create and has been developed in collaboration with researchers, instrument builders, free-divers and other specialists from around the world. After a long COVID-crisis, there was again a demand for concerts, and Between Music had started five other artistic projects that investigated water from different angles. The great vision was to gather all works in a sustainable water festival that would tour the world, where local citizens, artists and international researchers would gather in conversations and artistic experiences with and about water. But after the bankruptcy, the band's musicians have had to say no to requests from e.g. New York and Norway because they could not play without their special instruments, aquariums and the basic administration and insurance that it requires. Between Music is now ready to re-emerge and return to the world stage, and the orchestra is launching a crowdfunding campaign to finance new activities. The crowdfunding campaign can be seen at: www.betweenmusic.dk with videos that provide insight into Between Music’s concert AquaSonic, the bankruptcy and the new projects that the musicians were working on before the bankruptcy.

Sound's hidden journey - Faroe Icelands -Teaser

It is believed that some whale species use the echo of rocky walls to amplify their singing. With this inspiration in mind, Between Music went to Faroe Islands to record underwater sounds ricochet on the rocks together with Jens L. Thompsen. From the deep caves of the Atlantic Ocean to the quiet fjords of Greenland and the shallow waters of the North Sea, Sound's Hidden Journey is a project to create the first true underwater reverb software, based on recordings of the actual underwater acoustic environment in the nordic waters. Artists, marine biologists, acousticians and software developers all work together in this project initiated by Between Music, with a common curiosity for the unanswered and the ambiguous. Come along on the journey by following Between Music on facebook and Instagram. Read more about the project here: https://ift.tt/3oBn7lZ
